Learning Objectives

  • Describe the difference between normal mourning and grief; pathological grief (Horowitz), the three types of morbid grief reactions (Lindemann), the four types of mourning, and complicated grief in comparison to normal grieving processes.
  • List and identify five of each symptoms of pathological grief: emotional symptoms, cognitive responses, behavioral reactions, and physical symptoms.
  • Provide conceptual frameworks for understanding complex clinical cases related to grief, according to different theoretical orientations, such as classical psychodynamic or cognitive behavioral theories.
  • Identify and apply the best assessment tools to assess for grief related issues: Manthorpe Protocol, Adult Attachment Interview, and other assessment tools.
  • Discuss the steps of grief resolution therapy and when to utilize this approach.
  • Critically evaluate the conceptual and methodological approaches of published research and its applicability to community-based clinical populations, the DSM-5 conceptualizations of grief-related disorders, and the cultural meaning of these experiences.
  • Discuss the impact of human diversity including age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, ethnicity, and culture when working with clinical issues related to grief, specifically related to the function of therapeutic rituals through mourning and grieving in treatment.
  • Explain, practice, and gain increased comfort in developing a treatment plan for individuals presenting with grief-related issues, from initial client contact through termination.
  • Identify and describe the differential diagnosis between normal and complicated grief as well as normal and complicated mourning.
